Ethel R. Lee
In 2013 our lives were suddenly altered, and the life in which our family of five had known was no more. At the age of 46, my late husband experienced an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). He underwent 5 different surgeries on his brain and suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. This left him needing 100% assistance with all his physical and daily care and required a sitter most hours of the day. After being hospitalized for 5 months, 3 of which were spent in ICU; it was time for his discharge.
I had two weeks to get things in order and change the function of our home.
At the onset of his health issues, I was working as a bookkeeper with the local school board but resigned due to the severity of his care upon discharged. However, I discovered those management and strategic skills were valuable to my new duties as a caregiver. My five years of organizational and multitasking skills as a former pre-kindergarten teacher were equally beneficial. But most helpful of all were my education, training, and 10 years' experience as a medical assistance.
I would have never imagined my vastly different careers would somehow be meshed together to serve him, and now you in this capacity, but God knows and has prepared me for the assignment.
So, whether it's a parent, spouse, child, relative, or friend you're caring for, caregiving can be challenging. However, being prepared, informed, and organized can be exceptionally comforting and hopefully lessen the stress. I'm here to assist you!
